Just before attaining equilibrium by a reversible reaction, it is found that
  • a)
velocity of both forward and backward reactions decrease
  • b)
velocity of both forward and backward reactions increase
  • c)
velocity of forward reaction decreases but backward reaction increases
  • d)
velocity of forward reaction decreases but backward reaction decreases
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

Explanation:

Reversible reactions refer to the chemical reactions where the reactants react to form products, and these products can also react to form the reactants back. Thus, the reaction can happen in both the forward and backward directions. The point at which the forward and backward reactions are happening at the same rate is called equilibrium.

Just before attaining equilibrium, the reaction is said to be at a state of dynamic equilibrium, where the concentrations of both the reactants and products are changing, but the rate of forward and backward reactions is equal.

Now, let's understand the effect of approaching equilibrium on the velocity of forward and backward reactions.

Effect on the velocity of forward reaction:

As the reaction approaches equilibrium, the concentration of reactants decreases, and the concentration of products increases. This decrease in reactant concentration leads to a decrease in the velocity of the forward reaction. The forward reaction rate slows down because there are fewer reactants to react with. Therefore, option A and B are incorrect.

Effect on the velocity of backward reaction:

As the concentration of products increases, the concentration of reactants increases. This increase in reactant concentration leads to an increase in the velocity of the backward reaction. The backward reaction rate increases because there are more reactants available to react with the products. Therefore, option D is incorrect.

Effect on the velocity of both forward and backward reactions:

As explained above, the velocity of the forward reaction decreases, and the velocity of the backward reaction increases as the reaction approaches equilibrium. Therefore, option C is the correct answer.

In summary, the velocity of the forward reaction decreases, and the velocity of the backward reaction increases just before attaining equilibrium in a reversible reaction.

As at equilibrium point the velocity of forward and backward reactions both remains equal. so the velocity of forward reaction decreases from maximum point and the velocity of the backward reaction increases from zero point. so answer c is correct
