Vapour density of the substance

Solution:

1. Convert volume of vapours to volume at STP
- NTP = 1 atm and 298 K
- STP = 1 atm and 273 K
- Using the Combined Gas Law,
(P1 x V1)/T1 = (P2 x V2)/T2
- P1 = P2 = 1 atm
- T1 = 298 K
- T2 = 273 K
- V1 = 45 mL
- V2 = ?

(V1/T1) = (V2/T2)
V2 = (V1 x T2)/T1
V2 = (45 mL x 273 K)/298 K
V2 = 41.15 mL

2. Convert mass to moles
- Molar mass of substance = ?
- Let's assume the substance is a hydrocarbon
- So, molar mass = (12 x a) + (1 x b)
- where a and b are the number of carbon and hydrogen atoms respectively
- Let's assume the substance has 1 carbon and 4 hydrogen atoms
- Molar mass = (12 x 1) + (1 x 4) = 16 g/mol
- Moles of substance = mass/molar mass
- Moles of substance = 0.24 g/16 g/mol
- Moles of substance = 0.015 mol

3. Calculate Vapour density
- Vapour density = (Molar mass of substance/2) x (Volume of vapours/Volume at STP)
- Vapour density = (16 g/mol/2) x (45 mL/41.15 mL) x (1 L/1000 mL) x (1/0.089 g)
- Vapour density = 56.0
