Given:
Mass of fireman, m = 60 kg
Force exerted by the fireman, F = 600 N
Coefficient of friction between the hands and the pole, μ = 0.5
Acceleration due to gravity, g = 10 m/s²

To find: Acceleration of the fireman sliding down the pole

Solution:

1. Find the force of friction, f

f = μN
The normal force, N = mg (as the fireman is not falling)
∴ f = μmg

2. Find the net force, Fnet

Fnet = F - f
∴ Fnet = F - μmg
Fnet = 600 - 0.5 x 60 x 10
Fnet = 300 N

3. Find the acceleration, a

Newton's Second Law states that Fnet = ma
∴ a = Fnet/m
a = 300/60
a = 5 m/s²

Therefore, the acceleration of the fireman sliding down the pole is 5 m/s².

Answer: (d) 5 m/s²
