A car moving with a speed of 40 km/h can be stopped by applying brakes at least after 2 m. If the same car is moving with a speed of 80 km/h, what is the minimum stopping distance? [1998]
  • a)
    8 m
  • b)
    6 m
  • c)
    4 m
  • d)
    2 m
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
A car moving with a speed of 40 km/h can be stopped by applying brakes...
v2 – u2 = 2as
  where u1 = 40 km/h
For same retarding force s ∝ u2
∴ s2 =   4s =   8mIf
 F is retarding force and s the stopping distance, then
For same retarding force, s α v2
∴ s2 = 4s1 = 4 x 2= 8m

A car moving with a speed of 40 km/h can be stopped by applying brakes...
Given:
Initial speed of car (u) = 40 km/h
Stopping distance at this speed (s) = 2 m

To find:
Stopping distance when speed is 80 km/h

Solution:
Let us first convert the given speeds from km/h to m/s:
Initial speed (u) = 40 km/h = 40 x 1000 m/3600 s = 11.11 m/s
Final speed (v) = 0 m/s (car comes to a stop)

Using the formula for stopping distance:
s = (v^2 - u^2) / 2a

where a is the deceleration or retardation of the car due to braking.

At u = 11.11 m/s and s = 2 m, we can find a:
2 = (0 - 11.11^2) / (2 x a)
a = 154.34 m/s^2

Now, using the same formula at u = 22.22 m/s (80 km/h) and a = 154.34 m/s^2:
s = (0 - 22.22^2) / (2 x 154.34) = 8 m

Therefore, the minimum stopping distance of the car when moving at a speed of 80 km/h is 8 m.

Answer: Option A (8 m)
