Angiotensinogen Production and Secretion

Angiotensinogen is a protein synthesized and secreted by liver cells. It is a precursor molecule for the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) pathway, which plays a crucial role in regulating blood pressure and fluid balance in the body.

Function of Angiotensinogen

Angiotensinogen is a prohormone that is cleaved by the enzyme renin to produce angiotensin I, which is further processed by angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) to produce the active hormone angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor that increases blood pressure by narrowing blood vessels and stimulating the release of aldosterone, a hormone that promotes sodium and water retention in the kidneys.

Sources of Angiotensinogen

Although angiotensinogen is primarily produced by liver cells, it can also be synthesized and secreted by other tissues, such as adipose tissue, brain, and heart. In addition, angiotensinogen gene expression has been detected in several other organs, including the lungs, kidneys, and adrenal glands.

Clinical Significance

Abnormalities in the RAAS pathway, such as elevated levels of angiotensin II, have been implicated in the development of hypertension, heart failure, and kidney disease. Drugs that target different components of the RAAS pathway, such as ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), are commonly used to treat these conditions.

Angiotensinogen is an α-globulin protein produced by liver. Renin serves as an enzyme in the conversion of the plasma protein angiotensinogen into angiotensin. This protein stimulates the adrenal cortex to produce aldosterone which acts on the cells of the ascending limb of the loop of Henle, and increases the rate of reabsorption of Na Reabsorption of Nal brings about the uptake of an osmotically equivalent amount of water. Absorption of sodium and water increases blood volume and pressure.Hence, the correct answer is 'liver cells'.
