Why did Gandhi withdraw the Civil Disobedience movement?
Mahatma Gandhi initiated the Civil Disobedience Movement on 12th March 1930 to protest against the British government's salt tax. The movement was a non-violent protest against the British rule in India which aimed to make India an independent country. However, after a few months of the movement, Gandhi withdrew the movement. There were several reasons for the withdrawal of the movement.
Agreement with Irwin
- Gandhi held talks with Lord Irwin, the then Viceroy of India, in March 1931 and agreed to sign the Gandhi-Irwin Pact.
- The pact provided a truce between the British Government and the Indian National Congress, and the Congress was allowed to participate in the second Round Table Conference in London.
- The agreement led to the release of all political prisoners except those guilty of violence.
