Statement i) is correct - Gestational diabetes must be controlled to protect the baby's growth and development.

Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy. It is characterized by high blood sugar levels in pregnant women who have not previously been diagnosed with diabetes. If left uncontrolled, gestational diabetes can have adverse effects on both the mother and the baby.

During pregnancy, the baby relies on the mother's blood glucose for nourishment. When the mother has gestational diabetes, her blood glucose levels are elevated, which means that the baby is also exposed to higher levels of glucose. This can lead to the baby's pancreas producing more insulin to process the excess glucose. As a result, the baby may grow larger than usual, a condition known as macrosomia. This can increase the risk of complications during delivery, such as shoulder dystocia (when the baby's shoulders get stuck during birth) or the need for a cesarean section.

Additionally, uncontrolled gestational diabetes can affect the baby's lung development. It can also increase the risk of the baby developing low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) after birth. This is because the baby's body continues to produce high levels of insulin even after delivery, but there is no longer an excess supply of glucose from the mother.

Therefore, it is crucial to control gestational diabetes to protect the baby's growth and development. This is typically achieved through lifestyle modifications, such as following a healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and monitoring blood sugar levels. In some cases, medication or insulin therapy may also be necessary.

Statement ii) is incorrect - Gestational diabetes does not put women at risk for developing Type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. It is not caused by gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes is a temporary condition that occurs only during pregnancy and usually resolves after delivery.

However, having gestational diabetes does increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. Women who have had gestational diabetes are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes within 5-10 years after pregnancy. This is because gestational diabetes is often a sign of insulin resistance, a condition where the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin. Insulin resistance is a key factor in the development of type 2 diabetes.

In conclusion, statement i) is correct as gestational diabetes must be controlled to protect the baby's growth and development. However, statement ii) is incorrect as gestational diabetes does not put women at risk for developing type 1 diabetes.
