Verified Answer
Which of the following substances, if introduced into the blood stream...
Fibrinogen, prothrombin, throm- boplastin are respectively clotting factors I, II and III.
Thromboplastin released from injured platelets or injured tissue. This converts prothrombin into thrombin in the presence of calcium ions. The thrombin converts fibrinogen into fibrin and the latter froms the clot.

Thromboplastin

Thromboplastin is a substance that initiates the clotting process in the blood. When introduced into the bloodstream, thromboplastin activates the coagulation cascade, leading to the formation of a blood clot at the site of its introduction.

Coagulation of Blood

The coagulation cascade involves a series of reactions that ultimately result in the conversion of fibrinogen into fibrin, which forms a mesh-like structure to trap blood cells and platelets, forming a clot. Thromboplastin plays a crucial role in initiating this process by activating clotting factors in the blood.

Effects of Thromboplastin

When thromboplastin is introduced into the bloodstream, it triggers the activation of prothrombin to thrombin, which in turn converts fibrinogen to fibrin. This leads to the formation of a blood clot at the site of introduction of thromboplastin.

Heparin

On the other hand, heparin is an anticoagulant that prevents the formation of blood clots by inhibiting the action of thrombin. Therefore, heparin would not cause coagulation of blood at the site of its introduction, unlike thromboplastin.

In conclusion, the substance that would cause coagulation of blood at the site of its introduction is Thromboplastin.
