A police saw a Thief at a distance of 2km. When Police started chasing...
Given:
Distance between Police and Thief = 2 km
Ratio of Speeds of Police to Thief = 5:4

To find:
Distance covered by Police to catch the Thief.

Solution:
Let's assume the speed of Police and Thief as 5x and 4x respectively.
As per the question, the ratio of speeds of Police to Thief is 5:4
Therefore, the speed of Police = 5x and the speed of Thief = 4x.

Let's assume that the thief was caught after he ran for 'd' km.
So, the total distance covered by Police and Thief will be 2 + d km.

Now, we know that Distance = Speed × Time.
Let's assume that the time taken by the Police to catch the Thief is 't' hours.

Time taken by Police = Time taken by Thief
=> (Distance covered by Police) / (Speed of Police) = (Distance covered by Thief) / (Speed of thief)
=> (2 + d) / 5x = d / 4x
=> 8x + 4dx = 5x^2
=> 4dx = 5x^2 - 8x
=> d = (5x - 8x) / 4x
=> d = 5/4

Therefore, the distance covered by the Thief = 5/4 km.
The distance covered by the Police = 2 + 5/4 km = 13/4 km = 3.25 km (approx).

Hence, the correct answer is option (D) 10 km.
