Consider two hosts X and Y, connected by a single direct link of rate 106 bits/sec. The distance between the two hosts is 10,000 km and the propagation speed along the link is 2 x 108 m/s. Hosts X send a file of 50,000 bytes as one large message to hosts Y continuously. Let the transmission and propagation delays be p milliseconds and q milliseconds, respectively. Then the vales of p and q are:
  • a)
    p = 50 and q = 100
  • b)
    p = 50 and q = 400
  • c)
    p = 100 and q = 50
  • d)
    p = 400 and q = 50
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

Consider two hosts X and Y, connected by a single direct link of rate ...
Propagation delay = link length/ signal speed = (10^7)/(2*10^8)sec = 5 =.005 sec =50 msec Transmission delay = data length/signal bandwith = 50000*8/10^6 sec =.04 sec =400 msec

Consider two hosts X and Y, connected by a single direct link of rate ...
Calculation of Transmission Delay:

Transmission time (Tt) = size of message / transmission rate
Tt = (50,000 bytes x 8 bits/byte) / 106 bits/sec
Tt = 0.4 sec

Calculation of Propagation Delay:

Propagation time (Tp) = distance / propagation speed
Tp = 10,000,000 meters / 2 x 108m/s
Tp = 0.05 sec

Calculation of Total Delay:

Total delay (Td) = Transmission delay (Tt) + Propagation delay (Tp)
Td = 0.4 sec + 0.05 sec
Td = 0.45 sec

Calculation of Transmission and Propagation Delays:

Transmission delay (Tt) = p milliseconds / 1000
Propagation delay (Tp) = q milliseconds / 1000
Total delay (Td) = Transmission delay (Tt) + Propagation delay (Tp)

Substituting the values of Td, Tt and Tp, we get:

0.45 = p/1000 + q/1000
p + q = 450

Since the transmission delay is larger than the propagation delay, p should be larger than q. The only option that satisfies this condition is option D, where p = 400 and q = 50.
