A square pile group of 9 piles having depth of 9 m passes through a re...
D' = Depth of soil fill = 4.5 m Individual piles:

Negative skin friction, Qng = n x PD'c
= 9 x π x 0.3 x 4.5 x 30 =1145.11 kN
Pile group: B = 2S + d
=2x0.6+0.3=1.5m
Perimeter = 4B = 6m
Area = B2 = 2.25 m2
Negative skin friction,

= 30 X 4.5 X 6 + 15 X 4.5 X 2.25
= 810 + 151.875
= 961.875 kN .
Negative skin friction (the larger of the two values) = 1145.11 kN

A square pile group of 9 piles having depth of 9 m passes through a re...
Given data:
Depth of pile group = 9 m
Depth of filled material = 4.5 m
Diameter of pile = 30 cm
Pile spacing = 60 cm
Unconfined compressive strength = 60 kN/m2
Unit weight = 15 kN/m3

To find: Negative skin friction of the pile group

Calculation:
1. Area of one pile = πd2/4 = 0.7069 m2
2. Total area of pile group = 9 × 0.7069 = 6.3621 m2
3. Volume of filled material = 6.3621 × 4.5 = 28.62945 m3
4. Weight of filled material = 28.62945 × 15 = 429.44175 kN
5. Frictional resistance of pile = qu × Ap
Where,
qu = unconfined compressive strength of soil
Ap = perimeter of pile × depth of soil
Perimeter of pile = πd = 0.9425 m
Depth of soil = 4.5 m
So, Ap = 4.24125 m2
Frictional resistance of pile = 60 × 4.24125 = 254.475 kN
6. Negative skin friction of pile group = Frictional resistance of pile × Total area of pile group
= 254.475 × 6.3621
= 1145.114 kN (approx)

Therefore, the negative skin friction of the pile group is 1145.11 kN (approx).
