A Transformer is rated at 100 KVA. At full load its copper loss is 1200 W and its iron loss is 850 W. Calculate the load (in KVA) at which maximum efficiency will occur.

    Given data:
    Transformer rating = 100 KVA
    Copper loss at full load = 1200 W
    Iron loss at full load = 850 W

    Efficiency of transformer:

    Efficiency = Output power / Input power
    Output power = Input power - losses

    Input power = Output power + losses

    Input power = Output power + copper loss + iron loss

    Output power = Input power - copper loss - iron loss

    Efficiency = (Input power - copper loss - iron loss) / Input power

    Efficiency = 1 - (copper loss + iron loss) / Input power

    At maximum efficiency, copper loss = iron loss

    Let the load at which maximum efficiency occurs be x KVA

    At x KVA, copper loss = iron loss

    0.02x^2 = 850

    x^2 = 42500

    x = 206.2 KVA

    But, transformer rating is 100 KVA, hence maximum efficiency will occur at full load.

    Therefore, load at which maximum efficiency will occur = 100 KVA

    Efficiency at full load:

    Efficiency = (Input power - copper loss - iron loss) / Input power

    Efficiency = (100000 - 1200 - 850) / 100000

    Efficiency = 0.9875

    Efficiency in percentage = 98.75%

    Therefore, maximum efficiency of the transformer will occur at full load (100 KVA) and it will be 98.75%.
