One of the lines in the emission spectrum of Li2+ has the same wavelength as that of the 2nd line of Balmer series in hydrogen spectrum. The electronic transition corresponding to this line is :
  • a)
    n = 4 → n = 2
  • b)
    n = 8 → n = 2
  • c)
    n = 8 → n = 4
  • d)
    n = 12 → n = 6
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

Simply use the formula n*Z to calculate the shell in which election will come after excitation ...
whwer n=series no 1for lyman
2 for balmer
3 for paschen
4 for brackett
5 for pfund
6 for humphrey
and Z= atomic no of element other than hydrogen

so as per formula given in ques. balmer so use 2 and Z of Li2+ is 3 so 2*3=6 electron will come in 6th shell ....only last option is correct .....

suppose if the same ques. is for He+ so answer is n*Z
2*2=4 th shell will give as balmer of hydrogen ...
