Renal Threshold and Glucose Levels

Renal threshold refers to the concentration of a substance in the blood at which it starts to be excreted in the urine by the kidneys. In the case of glucose, the renal threshold is the blood glucose level at which the kidneys start to filter and remove glucose from the bloodstream.

Statement i: The renal threshold of glucose is 180 mg/100ml of blood.
This statement is correct. The renal threshold of glucose is generally around 180 mg/100ml of blood. Below this threshold, the kidneys reabsorb all the filtered glucose back into the bloodstream. However, if the blood glucose level exceeds this threshold, the kidneys cannot reabsorb all the glucose, and the excess glucose is excreted in the urine.

Statement ii: If blood level of glucose exceeds 180mg, it leads to diabetes insipidus.
This statement is incorrect. Diabetes insipidus is a condition that affects the production or regulation of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), leading to excessive urination and thirst. It is not directly related to blood glucose levels. High blood glucose levels are typically associated with diabetes mellitus, not diabetes insipidus.

Statement iii: If blood level of glucose exceeds 180mg, it leads to diabetes mellitus.
This statement is incorrect. While it is true that persistently high blood glucose levels are a characteristic feature of diabetes mellitus, exceeding the renal threshold of glucose alone does not lead to diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition that occurs when the body cannot effectively use or produce insulin, leading to high blood glucose levels.

Conclusion:
Only statement i) is correct. The renal threshold of glucose is 180 mg/100ml of blood. Exceeding this threshold may result in the kidneys excreting glucose in the urine, but it does not directly lead to diabetes insipidus or diabetes mellitus.
