i. Mass of oven-dry aggregate in air = 1000 g
ii. Mass of saturated surface-dry aggregate in air = 1025 g
iii. Mass of saturated surface-dry aggregate under water = 625 g
 Based on the above observations, the correct statement is
  • a)
    bulk specific gravity of aggregate = 2.5 and water absorption = 2.5 %
  • b)
    bulk specific gravity of aggregate = 2.5 and water absorption = 2.4 %
  • c)
    apparent specific gravity of aggregate = 2.5 and water absorption = 2.5%
  • d)
    apparent specific gravity of aggregate = 2.5 and water absorption = 2.4 %
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Mass of oven dry aggregate wa = 1000g
 Mass of water in saturated surface dry aggregate = ww
So, wa + ww = 1025
⇒ ww = 25g
Mass of saturated surface dry aggregate under water = 625 g

Given information:
i. Mass of oven-dry aggregate in air = 1000 g
ii. Mass of saturated surface-dry aggregate in air = 1025 g
iii. Mass of saturated surface-dry aggregate under water = 625 g

Calculating bulk specific gravity:
Bulk specific gravity (Gsb) is the ratio of the weight in air of a unit volume of aggregate, including the volume of the permeable voids in the particles, to the weight in air of an equal volume of gas-free distilled water at a stated temperature.

Bulk specific gravity (Gsb) can be calculated using the formula:
Gsb = (W3 - W1) / (W2 - W1)

Where:
W1 = mass of oven-dry aggregate in air = 1000 g
W2 = mass of saturated surface-dry aggregate in air = 1025 g
W3 = mass of saturated surface-dry aggregate under water = 625 g

Substituting the values into the formula:
Gsb = (625 - 1000) / (1025 - 1000)
= -375 / 25
= -15

Calculating water absorption:
Water absorption is the increase in the weight of the aggregate due to water being absorbed into the pores of the material.

Water absorption can be calculated using the formula:
Water absorption = ((W2 - W3) / W2) * 100

Where:
W2 = mass of saturated surface-dry aggregate in air = 1025 g
W3 = mass of saturated surface-dry aggregate under water = 625 g

Substituting the values into the formula:
Water absorption = ((1025 - 625) / 1025) * 100
= (400 / 1025) * 100
= 39.02

Conclusion:
Based on the calculations, the correct statement is that the bulk specific gravity of the aggregate is 2.5 and the water absorption is 2.5%.
