As they approach the Earth's surface, they interact with the atoms in the atmosphere and lose energy, causing them to decay. However, due to time dilation effects predicted by special relativity, the muons are able to travel a distance of approximately 600 meters before decaying. This is because from their perspective, their lifetime is extended due to their high velocity.

This phenomenon has been confirmed by experiments, including one conducted by physicist Luis Alvarez in 1963. By measuring the flux of muons at different altitudes, he was able to show that the number of muons detected at the surface was much higher than what would be expected based on the rate of muon production in the upper atmosphere. This confirmed that a significant number of muons were surviving the journey to the Earth's surface.

The ability of muons to penetrate deep into matter has important applications in fields such as particle physics and medical imaging. For example, muon tomography is a technique that uses muons to create images of the interior of objects, including volcanoes and archaeological structures.
