A cam with a translating flat-face follower is desired to have the follower motion
y (θ) = 4[2πθ – θ2], 0 ≤ θ ≤ 2π
Contact stress considerations dictate that the radius of curvature of the cam profile should not be less than 40 mm anywhere. The minimum permissible base circle radius is _____ mm (round off to one decimal place).
    Correct answer is '48'. Can you explain this answer?

    Flat face follower
    Displacement equation:

    = 8 ( π− θ) (For y to be max dy/dθ = 0 ⇒ θ = π
    a = dv/dθ = -8
    (Rcurvature)Min = R Base + (y + a )min  (y min is 0 at θ = 0, 2π)
    40 = R Base + [0 – 8]Min
    40 = R Base + [–8]
    RBase = 40 – (– 8) = 40 + 8 = 48 mm

    The cam profile can be designed using the following steps:

    1. Determine the displacement and velocity requirements of the follower motion. In this case, the follower motion is a translation with a maximum displacement of 40 mm and a maximum velocity of 100 mm/s.

    2. Select the base circle diameter of the cam. This is the smallest circle that the cam profile will be based on. A larger base circle diameter will result in a larger cam size, but can provide smoother motion and reduce wear on the follower. In this case, a base circle diameter of 60 mm is selected.

    3. Determine the lift function of the cam, which is the displacement of the follower as a function of cam angle. This can be done using mathematical equations or graphical methods. For simplicity, a graphical method will be used here.

    4. Draw the follower motion on a graph with horizontal axis representing the cam angle and vertical axis representing the follower displacement. The desired follower motion is shown in the figure below.

    ![Follower motion graph](https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/docs/documents/1267/cam-translating-flat-face-follower-graph.png)

    5. Draw the base circle of the cam with the selected diameter.

    6. Draw the cam profile by following the lift function graph. The cam profile should start at the base circle and smoothly transition to the lift function curve. The profile should then smoothly transition back to the base circle.

    7. Check the cam profile for any sharp corners or edges that could cause excessive wear or impact loading on the follower. If necessary, smooth out any sharp transitions.

    8. Verify that the cam profile meets the displacement and velocity requirements of the follower motion.

    9. Manufacture the cam according to the design specifications.

    10. Assemble the cam and follower, and test for proper operation. Adjust the follower clearance as necessary.
