Traffic volume count has been collected on a 2 lane road section which needs upgradation due to severe traffic flow condition. Maximum service flow rate per lane is observed as 1280 veh/h at level of service ‘C’. The Peak Hour Factor is reported as 0.78125. Historical traffic volume count provides Annual Average Daily Traffic as 122270 veh/day. Directional split of the traffic flow is observed to be 60 : 40. Assuming that traffic stream consists of ‘All Cars’ and all drivers are ‘Regular Commuters’, the number of extra lane(s) (round off to the next higher integer) to be provide, is ________.
    Correct answer is '6'. Can you explain this answer?
    Verified Answer
    Traffic volume count has been collected on a 2 lane road section which...
    Directional design hourly volume (DDHV)
    DDHV = AADT × K × D
    where, D = Volume proportion in major direction, K = The proportion of AADT occuring in peak hour.
    DDHV = 12270 × 0.6 × K [∵ K Assumed 1]
    = 7362
    fHV = Heavy veh. adjustment factor = 1 for car
    fP = Road user familarity adjustment factor
    = 1 for regular commuters
    As per HCM,
    Number of lanes required,

    Number of extra lanes = 8 – 2 = 6 lanes

    C. In order to determine the required number of lanes for the upgraded road section, we need to calculate the design hourly volume (DHV) based on the observed maximum service flow rate.

    DHV = Maximum service flow rate per lane * Number of lanes
    DHV = 1280 veh/h * 2 lanes
    DHV = 2560 veh/h

    Therefore, the design hourly volume for the upgraded road section is 2560 vehicles per hour.

    To determine the number of lanes required, we can compare the DHV with the capacity of a single lane.

    If the DHV is less than or equal to the capacity of a single lane, then only one lane is required. In this case, the DHV is greater than the capacity of a single lane (1280 veh/h), so we need more than one lane.

    To find the number of lanes required, we divide the DHV by the capacity of a single lane.

    Number of lanes required = DHV / Maximum service flow rate per lane
    Number of lanes required = 2560 veh/h / 1280 veh/h
    Number of lanes required = 2 lanes

    Therefore, the upgraded road section should have 2 lanes to accommodate the observed traffic flow condition.
