- On 23 March 1940, the League moved a resolution demanding a measure of autonomy for the Muslim majority areas of the subcontinent. M.A Jinnah, in his two hours presidential address in English, narrated the events that took place in the past few months (1939-40) and concluded, " Hindus and the Muslims belong to two different religious philosophies, social customs, and literature. They neither inter-marry nor inter-dine together, and, indeed, they belong to two different civilizations that are based mainly on conflicting ideas and conceptions. Their concepts on life and of life are different. It is quite clear that Hindus and Muslims derive their inspiration from different sources of history. They have different epics, different heroes and different episodes. Very often the hero of one is a foe of the other, and likewise, their victories and defeats overlap. To yoke together two such nations under a single state, one as a numerical minority and the other as a majority must lead to growing discontent and final destruction of any fabric that may be so built up for the government of such a state. He further claimed, " Mussalmans are a nation according to any definition of nationhood. We wish our people to develop to the fullest spiritual, cultural, economic, social and political life in a way that we think best and in consonance with our own ideals and according to the genius of our people. Hence statement 1 is correct.
- In fact, Sikandar Hayat Khan, Punjab Premier, and leader of the Unionist Party, who had drafted the resolution, declared in a Punjab assembly speech on 1 March 1941 that he was opposed to a Pakistan that would mean " Muslim Raj here and Hindu Raj elsewhere. If Pakistan means unalloyed Muslim Raj in Punjab then I will have nothing to do with it. He reiterated his plea for a loose (united), confederation with considerable autonomy for the confederating units.
- After withdrawing its support to the Cabinet Mission Plan, the Muslim League decided on " Direct Action for winning its Pakistan demand.
- It announced 16 August 1946 as " Direct Action Day. It is also known as the 1946 Calcutta Killings. On this day, riots broke out in Calcutta, lasting several days and leaving several thousand people dead. By March 1947 violence spread to many parts of northern India. Hence statement 2 is correct.
