Which one of the following pairs of chemicalsubstances is correctly ca...
C) Troponin and myosin - Complex proteins in striated muscles

- Troponin and myosin are correctly categorized as complex proteins found in striated muscles.
- Striated muscles are a type of muscle tissue characterized by alternating light and dark bands, which give them a striped appearance.
- Troponin is a regulatory protein that plays a crucial role in muscle contraction. It is composed of three subunits: troponin C, troponin I, and troponin T. Troponin C binds to calcium ions, troponin I inhibits the interaction between actin and myosin, and troponin T anchors the troponin complex to the tropomyosin.
- Myosin is a motor protein responsible for generating force during muscle contraction. It consists of two heavy chains and four light chains. The heavy chains have a globular head region (myosin head) that interacts with actin during muscle contraction.
- In striated muscles, troponin and myosin work together to regulate and facilitate muscle contraction. When calcium ions bind to troponin C, it triggers a conformational change in troponin and tropomyosin, exposing the binding sites on actin. The myosin heads then bind to actin, forming cross-bridges. ATP is hydrolyzed, causing the myosin heads to change their conformation and slide along the actin filaments, resulting in muscle contraction.
- Troponin and myosin are essential components of the sarcomere, which is the functional unit of striated muscles. The sarcomere is composed of overlapping actin and myosin filaments, and the interaction between these filaments is regulated by troponin.
- Both troponin and myosin are specific to striated muscles and are not found in other types of muscle tissues such as smooth muscles or cardiac muscles.
- Therefore, the categorization of troponin and myosin as complex proteins in striated muscles is correct.
