1) Saturated hydrocarbons :-
The hydrocarbons in which all the carbon atoms are linked by only single covalent bond are called saturated hydrocarbons or alkanes or paraffins.
The general formula of these compounds is
CnH2(n)+2
where , n=number of carbon atoms.
2) Unsaturated hydrocarbons:-
The hydrocarbons in which at least one double or triple bond ( multiple bond) is present along with single bond are called unsaturated compounds . These compounds generally burn with sooty or smoky flame due to their incomplete combination . These are more reactive than saturated hydrocarbons.
Unsaturated hydrocarbons are further divided into :-
a) Alkenes or olefins
b)Alkynes
