Burning of Hydrocarbons and Flame Color

Saturated Hydrocarbons

  • Saturated hydrocarbons contain only single bonds between carbon atoms and are also known as alkanes.

  • When burned, saturated hydrocarbons produce a blue flame.

  • This is because the blue flame indicates that the combustion is complete, and all the carbon and hydrogen molecules have been fully oxidized to produce carbon dioxide and water vapor.

  • The blue color of the flame is due to the emission of excited diatomic molecules of nitrogen and oxygen in the air, which produce a characteristic blue glow.

Unsaturated Hydrocarbons

  • Unsaturated hydrocarbons contain one or more double or triple bonds between carbon atoms and are also known as alkenes or alkynes.

  • When burned, unsaturated hydrocarbons produce a yellow or orange flame.

  • This is because the incomplete combustion of unsaturated hydrocarbons produces soot, which appears as a yellow or orange color in the flame.

  • The soot is produced when the carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon do not undergo complete oxidation, and instead form carbon particles that are heated to incandescence by the flame.

  • The yellow or orange color of the flame is due to the emission of excited sodium and potassium atoms in the air, which produce a characteristic yellow-orange glow.

Conclusion

  • The color of the flame produced by burning hydrocarbons depends on the degree of combustion and the presence of unsaturated bonds in the hydrocarbon.

  • Saturated hydrocarbons produce a blue flame, indicating complete combustion, while unsaturated hydrocarbons produce a yellow or orange flame, indicating incomplete combustion and the presence of soot.
