The latent heat of vaporisation of water is more than latent heat of fusion of ice, because
  • a)
On vaporisation much larger increase in volume takes place
  • b)
Increase in kinetic energy is much smaller on boiling
  • c)
    Kinetic energy decrease on boiling
  • d)
Volume decreases when the ice melts
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

In solids the molecules are closely packed. In liquids also the molecules are closely packed but not as much as solids. But in gases the molecules are very free to move in any direction. So, the volume change is more in case of liquid to gas than in solid to liquid. The energy required to completely separate the molecules from each other (in case of liquid to gas) is much greater than if you were just to reduce the separation between them (in case of solid to liquid). That is why the latent heat of vaporization is greater that the latent heat of fusion.
