  • Development of Primary Oocytes

    • Primary oocytes develop in the ovaries of a female fetus before birth.


  • Halting of Meiosis I

    • Meiosis I begins during fetal development but is halted in prophase I and remains that way until puberty.


  • Resumption of Meiosis I

    • At puberty, some primary oocytes are selected to resume meiosis I and complete it. The rest will degenerate.


  • Formation of Secondary Oocyte and First Polar Body

    • After meiosis I is complete, the primary oocyte divides into a secondary oocyte and a first polar body.


  • Halting of Meiosis II

    • The secondary oocyte begins meiosis II but is halted in metaphase II until fertilization occurs.


  • Fertilization

    • If fertilization occurs, the secondary oocyte completes meiosis II, resulting in the formation of a mature ovum and a second polar body.


  • Implantation or Degeneration

    • If the ovum is fertilized and implants in the uterus, it will develop into an embryo. If not, it will degenerate.



Oogenesis is the process by which female gametes, or ova, are produced. It occurs in the ovaries of a female fetus before birth and continues throughout her reproductive life. The process involves the development of primary oocytes, halting of meiosis I, resumption of meiosis I, formation of a secondary oocyte and first polar body, halting of meiosis II, fertilization, and implantation or degeneration.
