Calculation of Speed of Image in Side View Mirror

Given:

  • Speed of man (object) = 5m/s

  • Radius of curvature (R) of the side view mirror = 2m

  • Distance of man from mirror = 9m

Formula:

  • Speed of image = -vo x (R-d) / (R+d)

  • Where, vo = speed of object, d = distance of object from mirror, and R = radius of curvature

Calculation:

  • Substituting the given values in the formula,

  • Speed of image = -5 x (2-9) / (2+9) = -5 x (-7) / 11 = 35 / 11 = 3.18 m/s

  • Therefore, the speed of the image seen in the side view mirror of radius of curvature 2m of a stationary car when the man is at a distance 9m from the mirror is 3.18 m/s.

Explanation:

  • When an object is placed in front of a curved mirror, an image is formed due to the reflection of light.

  • The speed of the image formed in the mirror is given by the formula -vo x (R-d) / (R+d), where vo is the speed of the object, R is the radius of curvature of the mirror and d is the distance of the object from the mirror.

  • In this case, the speed of the man (object) is 5m/s, the radius of curvature of the mirror is 2m and the distance of the man from the mirror is 9m.

  • Substituting these values in the formula, we get the speed of the image as 3.18m/s.
