Primary Oogenesis

Primary oogenesis is the process by which female germ cells, known as oogonia, develop into primary oocytes within the ovaries. This process begins during fetal development and continues until menopause.

Primary Oocyte Formation
- During fetal development, oogonia undergo mitotic divisions to increase their numbers.
- Some of these oogonia differentiate into primary oocytes.

Primary Oocyte Development
- Primary oocytes are arrested in prophase I of meiosis until puberty.
- At puberty, with each menstrual cycle, a few primary oocytes are stimulated to resume meiosis.
