Step 1: Calculate the amount of H+ ions produced


  • One mole of HCL produces one mole of H+ ions and one mole of Cl- ions

  • 1 litre of 1M HCL contains 1 mole of H+ ions

  • 10 amp current passed for 1 hour = 3600 seconds

  • 1 faraday of electricity = 96500 coulombs of charge

  • 10 amp current passed for 3600 seconds = 36000 coulombs of charge

  • 1 mole of electrons = 96500 coulombs of charge

  • Therefore, electrons passed = 36000/96500 moles = 0.373 moles

  • As per Faraday's first law of electrolysis, the amount of substance deposited or liberated at an electrode is directly proportional to the amount of electricity passed through the electrolyte

  • Thus, 0.373 moles of H+ ions are produced



Step 2: Calculate the new concentration of H+ ions and pH


  • Total volume of the solution = 1 litre

  • Initial concentration of H+ ions = 1M

  • Final concentration of H+ ions = (1 + 0.373)/1 = 1.373 M

  • pH = -log[H+]

  • Therefore, pH = -log(1.373) = 0.862



Conclusion: The pH of the 1M HCL solution after passing 10A current for 1 hour is 0.862.
