Production of Bleaching Powder

Bleaching powder is an important chemical used for bleaching clothes and paper. It is also used as a disinfectant and in the preparation of chloroform. Bleaching powder is obtained by the action of chlorine gas on dry slaked lime. The chemical formula of bleaching powder is CaOCl2.

Steps in the production of bleaching powder:

1. Preparation of slaked lime: Calcium oxide (CaO) is obtained by heating limestone in a lime kiln. Calcium oxide is then mixed with water to obtain calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), also known as slaked lime.

2. Drying of slaked lime: The slaked lime obtained from the previous step is dried to remove any moisture content. This is done by spreading the slaked lime on a flat surface and exposing it to sunlight or by heating it in a kiln.

3. Chlorination: The dried slaked lime is then treated with chlorine gas in the presence of a catalyst such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen. The reaction between the chlorine gas and slaked lime produces bleaching powder (CaOCl2) and calcium chloride (CaCl2).

Ca(OH)2 + Cl2 → CaOCl2 + H2O
Ca(OH)2 + 2Cl2 → CaOCl2 + CaCl2 + H2O

4. Purification: The bleaching powder obtained from the previous step is in the form of a yellowish-white powder. It is impure and contains various impurities. The impurities are removed by treating the bleaching powder with water and filtering it. The filtrate is then dried, pulverized, and packed in air-tight containers.
