Read the following and answer the question given below:A young couple...
The technique adopted by the couple is GIFT (Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer).

Explanation:
GIFT is one of the assisted reproductive technologies (ART) used to treat infertility. It involves the transfer of both sperm and eggs (gametes) into the woman's fallopian tubes. This technique is suitable for couples with unexplained infertility or those with mild tubal blockages.

1. GIFT Procedure:
- The woman's ovaries are stimulated using hormonal medications to produce multiple mature eggs.
- The eggs are then retrieved through a minor surgical procedure called follicular aspiration.
- Meanwhile, the man provides a semen sample, which is processed in the laboratory to separate the sperm from other components.
- The retrieved eggs and the processed sperm are then mixed together and placed in a catheter.
- The catheter is inserted through a small incision in the woman's abdomen and the gametes are transferred directly into the fallopian tubes.
- This allows fertilization to occur naturally within the woman's body.
- The fertilized egg (embryo) then travels down the fallopian tube into the uterus, where it implants and develops into a pregnancy.

2. Advantages of GIFT:
- GIFT allows natural fertilization to occur within the woman's body, which some couples find desirable.
- It does not require the use of in vitro fertilization (IVF), where fertilization occurs outside the body.
- GIFT has a slightly higher success rate compared to IVF in certain cases, especially when there are mild tubal blockages.
- It does not involve the manipulation of embryos, which is a concern for some couples.

3. Limitations of GIFT:
- GIFT requires at least one functional fallopian tube in the woman for successful fertilization and implantation.
- It is an invasive procedure that requires a surgical incision and anesthesia.
- GIFT carries a risk of ectopic pregnancy, where the embryo implants outside the uterus.
- The success rate of GIFT is lower compared to IVF in cases of severe male factor infertility or other fertility issues.

In conclusion, GIFT is the technique adopted by the couple, involving the transfer of gametes into the woman's fallopian tubes to facilitate natural fertilization and increase the chances of pregnancy.
