Basic Structure of Immunoglobulin (Ig)
Immunoglobulins, also known as antibodies, are large Y-shaped proteins produced by plasma cells that are used by the immune system to identify and neutralize foreign objects such as bacteria and viruses. The basic Ig unit is composed of:
• Two identical heavy chains
• Two identical light chains
Explanation
The heavy chains are linked to each other and to a light chain by disulfide bonds and noncovalent interactions. The light chains are also linked to each other by a disulfide bond and to a heavy chain by a disulfide bond and noncovalent interactions. The heavy and light chains together form a variable region and a constant region. The variable region is responsible for binding to the antigen, while the constant region is responsible for effector functions such as complement activation and binding to Fc receptors on immune cells.
