In the gulp method of stream gauging by dilution technique, 50 liter of chemical X with concentration of 240g/L is introduced suddenly into the stream at a section. At a downstream monitoring section the concentration profile of chemical X that crossed the section was found to be a triangle with a base of 10 hours and a peak of 0.01 ppm. Estimate the discharge in stream in cumec. (Up to 1 decimal place)
  • a)
    66.3
  • b)

In the gulp method of stream gauging by dilution technique, 50 liter ...
Area of time concentration curve at d/s section = 1/2 = {2}\)×10×3600×0.01×10-6= 180×10-6
The weight of tracer introduced in gulp = 50 × 240g = 12 kg = 117.72N
Taking the unit weight of water as 9810N/m3
180×10-6 × 9810 Q = 117.72
Q = 66.667 m3/s.

In the gulp method of stream gauging by dilution technique, 50 liter ...
Solution:

Given data:

- Volume of chemical X introduced = 50 L
- Concentration of chemical X introduced = 240 g/L
- Concentration profile at downstream monitoring section = triangle with base = 10 hours and peak = 0.01 ppm

Let Q be the discharge in the stream in cumec.

Step 1: Calculate the mass of chemical X introduced

Mass of chemical X introduced = Volume x Concentration
= 50 x 240
= 12000 g

Step 2: Calculate the area of concentration profile

Area of triangle = (1/2) x base x height
= (1/2) x 10 x 0.01
= 0.05 ppm-hours

Step 3: Calculate the concentration of chemical X at downstream monitoring section

Concentration of chemical X = Mass of chemical X / (Discharge x Time)
0.05 = 12000 / (Q x 36000)
Q = 12000 / (0.05 x 36000)
= 66.7 cumec

Therefore, the discharge in the stream is estimated to be 66.7 cumec.

Answer: b) 66.9 (rounded off to 1 decimal place)
