In order to determine the relative density of a sand sample, its natural moisture content and bulk density were determined in the field and were found to be 7% and 1.61 g/cc respectively. Sample of this soil was then commented in a Proctor’s mould of 943.89 cc capacity at the loosest and the densest states. The following data were obtained:

Calculation of Bulk Density:

- Bulk density = Weight of soil / Volume of soil
- Volume of soil = Volume of mould – Volume of air voids (at loosest state)
- Volume of mould = 943.89 cc
- Volume of air voids (at loosest state) = Volume of mould x (1 + e) = 943.89 cc x (1 + 0.07) = 1010.32 cc
- Weight of soil (at loosest state) = Weight of mould + soil (at loosest state) – Weight of empty mould = 3363.6 g – 2100 g = 1263.6 g
- Bulk density (at loosest state) = 1263.6 g / (943.89 cc – 1010.32 cc) = 1.86 g/cc

- Volume of air voids (at densest state) = Volume of mould x (1 + e(max)) = 943.89 cc x (1 + (e(max))) = 943.89 cc x (1 + (e(max))^2)
- Weight of soil (at densest state) = Weight of mould + soil (at densest state) – Weight of empty mould = 3857.4 g – 2100 g = 1757.4 g
- Bulk density (at densest state) = 1757.4 g / (943.89 cc – 943.89 cc x (1 + (e(max))^2)) = 2.50 g/cc

Calculation of Relative Density:

- Relative density = (Bulk density – 1.0) / (2.65 – 1.0) x 100%
- Where, 2.65 is the density of quartz, which is considered as the reference material for relative density calculations.
- Relative density (at loosest state) = (1.86 g/cc – 1.0 g/cc) / (2.65 g/cc – 1.0 g/cc) x 100% = 53.96%
- Relative density (at densest state) = (2.50 g/cc – 1.0 g/cc) / (2.65 g/cc – 1.0 g/cc) x 100% = 69.11%
- The relative density of sand is 69.11%.
