The reaction between 2AuCl3 (gold chloride) and 3SnCl2 (tin chloride) can be used to prepare a colloidal solution of gold.

When these two substances are mixed together, a redox reaction occurs. Tin(II) chloride (SnCl2) acts as a reducing agent, while gold(III) chloride (AuCl3) acts as an oxidizing agent. The tin(II) chloride reduces the gold(III) chloride to elemental gold (Au), while it itself gets oxidized to tin(IV) chloride (SnCl4).

The overall reaction can be represented as follows:

2AuCl3 + 3SnCl2 -> 2Au + 3SnCl4

The gold formed in this reaction exists as small particles or clusters in the solution, resulting in a colloidal solution of gold. These gold particles have a characteristic red color, giving the solution a reddish hue.

Other substances like formaldehyde or phenyl hydrazine can also be used in the preparation of colloidal gold solutions. These substances act as reducing agents and help in the reduction of gold ions to form colloidal gold particles.
