An organic compound contains 80% (by wt.) carbon and the remaining per...
Given:
- An organic compound contains 80% (by wt.) carbon and the remaining percentage of hydrogen.
- Atomic wt. of C is 12, H is 1.

To find: The empirical formula of the compound.

Solution:
1. Assume a 100 g sample of the compound, which means it contains 80 g of carbon and 20 g of hydrogen.
2. Calculate the number of moles of each element:

- Moles of carbon = 80 g / 12 g/mol = 6.67 mol
- Moles of hydrogen = 20 g / 1 g/mol = 20 mol

3. Divide each mole value by the smallest mole value to get the simplest whole number ratio:

- Carbon: 6.67 mol / 6.67 mol = 1
- Hydrogen: 20 mol / 6.67 mol = 3

4. The empirical formula is therefore CH3, which has one carbon atom and three hydrogen atoms.

Therefore, the correct option is (a) CH3.

Element % smallest ratio. ratio
C. 80. 80/12(6.67) 6.67/6.67 = 1
H. 20 20/1. 20/ 6.67 = 3

So, EF = CH3
