The diagram below represents an experiment with isolated chloroplasts. The chloroplasts were first made acidic by soaking them in a solution at pH 4. After the thylakoid space reached pH 4, the chloroplasts were transferred to a basic solution at pH 8. The chloroplasts are then placed in the dark. Which of these compounds would you expect to be produced?
  • a)
    ATP
  • b)
    NAD
  • c)
    G3P
  • d)
    C6H12O6
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
The diagram below represents an experiment with isolated chloroplasts...
When the isolated chloroplast is soaked in a solution with pH 4, the lumen of thylakoids become acidic by absorbing extra H+ ions. When this acidic chloroplast will be transferred to the solution with pH 8, the extra H+ ion present inside the lumen of thylakoid will start moving outside from their higher concentration to lower concentration through ATP synthesising protein, called as ATPase, present in the wall of the thylakoid. It produces ATP using the energy of the proton motive force
