Embryo Transfer in IVF
Embryo transfer is the final step of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) process where fertilised eggs or embryos are transferred to the woman's uterus. The embryo transfer is usually done between day 2 to day 6 after fertilisation.
Embryo Development
After a successful fertilisation, the egg begins to divide. At first, it divides into two cells, then four and so on. After three days, the fertilised egg grows into a ball of cells, which is called a morula. On the fourth or fifth day, it becomes a blastocyst, which is a hollow ball of cells with a small group of cells inside that will form the embryo.
Blastocyst Transfer
Before the blastocyst becomes an 8-celled stage, it is transferred into the woman's uterus. This technique is called blastocyst transfer.
The procedure of blastocyst transfer is performed under ultrasound guidance. A thin, soft, flexible catheter is inserted into the cervix and guided through the uterus to the site of the embryo transfer. The embryologist places the blastocyst in a small amount of fluid in the catheter, which is then slowly injected into the uterus.
Advantages of Blastocyst Transfer
Blastocyst transfer has several advantages over traditional embryo transfer techniques, including:
1. Higher success rates: Blastocysts have a higher chance of implanting in the uterus than earlier-stage embryos.
2. Reduced risk of multiple pregnancies: By transferring a single blastocyst, the risk of multiple pregnancies is reduced.
3. Better selection of embryos: By allowing the embryos to develop for a longer period outside the body, embryologists can better select the embryo with the highest chance of success.
