  • The inclusion of the term 'socialist' in the preamble of the Indian constitution was widely debated in the Indian constituent assembly.
  • Dr. B. R. Ambedkar (chairman of the drafting committee) argued that it is against the very grain of democracy to decide in the Constitution what kind of society the people of India should live in.
  • He further added that it is perfectly possible today, for the majority people to hold that the socialist organisation of society is better than the capitalist organisation of society. But it would be perfectly possible for thinking people to devise some other form of social organisation which might be better than the socialist organisation of today or of tomorrow.
  • Therefore, it was incorrect for the Constitution to tie down the people to live in a particular form and not leave it to the people themselves to decide it for themselves. Eventually, the final text of the preamble omitted the word 'socialist'.
  • Hence option (b) is the correct answer.

Reasons for the Omission of 'Socialist'
The debate surrounding the inclusion of the term 'socialist' in the preamble of the Indian Constitution was complex and multifaceted. The eventual omission was primarily influenced by the principles of democracy and the function of the Constitution.
Democratic Principles
- It was argued that a Constitution should not dictate the kind of society its citizens should inhabit.
- The framers wanted to ensure that individuals had the freedom to choose their own socio-economic paths, aligning with the essence of democracy.
Individual Freedom
- Including the term 'socialist' could imply a coercive shift towards a specific economic model, potentially infringing on individual rights and freedoms.
- The framers aimed to create a framework that respected diverse views on economic systems.
Economic Diversity
- By omitting 'socialist', the Constitution allowed for a pluralistic economic environment.
- It created space for various economic ideologies to coexist, including capitalism, socialism, and mixed economies.
Focus on Governance
- The omission emphasized governance rather than economic ideology, focusing on justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity as overarching principles.
- This broader approach aimed to unify the nation while allowing for diverse interpretations of economic and social structures.
In conclusion, the omission of the term 'socialist' from the preamble was a deliberate choice to uphold democratic values, ensuring that the Constitution did not impose a specific societal model on the citizens of India. This decision reflects a commitment to individual freedoms and a diverse economic landscape.
