Colligative Properties and Relative Lowering in Vapour Pressure

Colligative properties are the properties of a solution that depend on the number of solute particles but not on the nature of the solute. Relative lowering in vapour pressure is an example of a colligative property. It is the ratio of the lowering in vapour pressure of the solution to the vapour pressure of the pure solvent.

Calculation of Mole Fraction of Sugar in the Solution

The lowering in vapour pressure of the sugar solution is given as 0.061 mm of Hg. The vapour pressure of water at 20°C is 17.5 mm of Hg.

Therefore, the relative lowering in vapour pressure can be calculated using the formula:

Relative lowering in vapour pressure = (Lowering in vapour pressure of solution) / (Vapour pressure of pure solvent)

= 0.061 / 17.5

= 0.00348

The relative lowering in vapour pressure is also equal to the mole fraction of the solute in the solution. Therefore, the mole fraction of sugar in the solution can be calculated as:

Mole fraction of sugar = Relative lowering in vapour pressure

= 0.00348

Hence, the correct answer is option 'A', which is 0.00348.
