Emperor Akbar named Prayag as Allahabad – city of god – also called Allahabad in 1575 AD. The city of Allahabad is situated at the confluence of three rivers- Ganga, Yamuna and the invisible Saraswati. Every 12th year when the waters are felt to be especially purifying, Allahabad holds a much greater festival called Kumbh Mela. Built by the emperor Akbar in 1583 AD the Allahabad fort stands on the banks of the river Yamuna near the confluence site i.e. SANGAM.
