In cisplatin there is one atom of platinum, three molecules of ammonia and two atoms of Chlorine. Cisplatin is a coordination compound. Cisplatin has a square planar geometry. It gets the prefix cis because it is cis isomer in which two same ligands are attached to the central metal atom (platinum) at the adjacent position. The chemical name of the Cisplatin is cis-diamminedichloroplatinum. In the name we can notice ammine with two m’s this is to indicate that ammonia acts as a ligand here.
For calculating the molar mass of the cisplatin, we will multiply number of each atom with their respective atomic mass and add them.

Calculating the mass of one molecule of cisplatin

To calculate the mass of one molecule of cisplatin, we need to determine the molecular weight of cisplatin and convert it to grams. The given molecular formula of cisplatin is Pt(NH3)2Cl2. Let's break it down step by step.

Step 1: Determine the atomic weights
The atomic weight of platinum (Pt) is 195.08 g/mol.
The atomic weight of nitrogen (N) is 14.01 g/mol.
The atomic weight of hydrogen (H) is 1.01 g/mol.
The atomic weight of chlorine (Cl) is 35.45 g/mol.

Step 2: Calculate the molecular weight of cisplatin
Multiply the atomic weights of each element by the number of atoms in the formula, and then sum them up.

Pt: 1 atom x 195.08 g/mol = 195.08 g/mol
N: 2 atoms x 14.01 g/mol = 28.02 g/mol
H: 6 atoms x 1.01 g/mol = 6.06 g/mol
Cl: 2 atoms x 35.45 g/mol = 70.90 g/mol

Molecular weight of cisplatin = 195.08 + 28.02 + 6.06 + 70.90 = 300.06 g/mol

Step 3: Convert the molecular weight to grams per molecule
To convert the molecular weight from grams per mole to grams per molecule, we need to divide it by Avogadro's number (6.022 x 10^23).

Mass of one molecule = 300.06 g/mol ÷ (6.022 x 10^23 molecules/mol)

= 4.98 x 10^-22 grams per molecule

Therefore, the correct answer is (d) 4.98 x 10^-22.
