An unpolarised beam of light is made to incident on an arrangement of...
Explanation:

When an unpolarised beam of light is incident on a polarising sheet, the transmitted light becomes partially polarised. The intensity of the transmitted light is given by Malus' Law:

I = I₀cos²θ

Where I₀ is the intensity of the incident light and θ is the angle between the transmission axis of the polarising sheet and the direction of polarisation of the incident light.

In this arrangement, the characteristic direction of each polarising sheet makes an angle of 45° with that of the preceding sheet. Let's consider the intensity of the incident light as I₀.

First polarising sheet:
The transmitted light will have an intensity of I₁ = I₀cos²45° = I₀/2.

Second polarising sheet:
The transmitted light from the first polarising sheet becomes the incident light for the second polarising sheet. The angle between the transmission axis of the second polarising sheet and the direction of polarisation of the incident light is also 45°.

Therefore, the intensity of the transmitted light through the second polarising sheet is I₂ = I₁cos²45° = (I₀/2)cos²45° = I₀/4.

Third polarising sheet:
Using the same logic, the intensity of the transmitted light through the third polarising sheet would be I₃ = I₂/4 = I₀/16.

Fourth polarising sheet:
Again, the angle between the transmission axis of the fourth polarising sheet and the direction of polarisation of the incident light is 45°.

Therefore, the intensity of the transmitted light through the fourth polarising sheet is I₄ = I₃cos²45° = (I₀/16)cos²45° = I₀/32.

Hence, the fraction of incident unpolarised light transmitted finally is I₄/I₀ = (I₀/32)/I₀ = 1/32.

Therefore, the correct answer is option D: 1/16.
