The figure below shows a network of eight resistors numbered 1 to 8, each equal to 2Ω , connected to a 3 V battery of negligible internal resistance. The current I in the circuit is
  • a)
    0.25 A
  • b)
    0.5 A
  • c)
    0.75 A
  • d)
    1.0 A
Correct answer is option 'D'. Can you explain this answer?

The figure below shows a network of eight resistors numbered 1 to 8, ...
Since all resistors are equal, it follows that current in resistor 1 = Current in resistor 2.
As the circuit is symmetric, current through resistor 3 and resistor 5 is zero. These resistors are not effective. Therefore, the equivalent resistance between A and D is the resistance of the parallel combination of resistances of 1, 4 and 6 (in series) and resistances of 2, 8 and 7 (in series).
Thus,
or, R = 3 Ω
Therefore, current I = 3 V/3 Ω = 1.0 A, which is choice (D).
