  • With the expansion of political power of the East India Company, the misuse of power by its officials also increased. The acquisition of political power by the company was questioned in England and there was pressure on Parliament to intervene. Continuous wars and mismanagement by the company officials landed it in a deep financial crisis. The company requested Parliament for financial help. The Parliament agreed on the - condition that it will regulate company administration in England and India. For this purpose, the Regulating Act of 1773 was passed. The Regulating Act of 1773 might be regarded as the first serious attempt by the British Parliament to regulate Indian affairs. It constituted for the first time a supreme government, headed by a Governor- General of Fort Wiiliam in Bengal and four Councillors, having the supervisory authority over the presidencies of Bombay and Madras. The presidencies were forbidden to make war or peace with Indian states without the consent of Governor-General and Council, except in cases of imminent necessity and cases where they had received direct orders from the court of Directors. The Act also provided for the establishment of a Supreme Court of Judicature at Calcutta. So, option a is correct.
  • The Regulating Act recognized the right of Parliament to regulate the civil, military and revenue affairs of the company's territories in India and registers the first concern in the intervention of the indian affairs. The Act suffered from certain fundamental defects which contributed to the difficulties of Warren Hastings; the then Governor General of India, who was opposed by his councillors. The Act was also vague about the jurisdiction control over subordinate presidencies and the jurisdiction between the Supreme Council and the Supreme Court. As a consequence of the defects of the Act, Warren Hastings found himself unable to carry out his administrative responsibilities and one crisis often developed another in the council. After he became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, William Pitt introduced some amendments in the above-mentioned Regulating Act of 1773, known as Pitts India Act of 1884. So, option b is not correct.
  • The Charter Act of 1813 was mainly about ending the monopoly of East India Company over the trade in India. However, the El C's monopoly over the trade from China and tea trade with India remained intact. So, option c is not correct.
  • The Government of India Act of 1858 ended the EIC's rule over the Indian Territory and handed it over to the British Parliament. The Viceroy, as a representative of the Crown, would look after the administration of India. So, option d is not correct.
Therefore, the correct answer is a.
