- The number of hybrid orbitals formed is equal to the number of atomic orbitals mixed.

Out of the given molecules, the central atom in BF3 adopts sp2 hybridization. This can be explained as follows:

- BF3 molecule consists of one central boron atom bonded to three fluorine atoms.
- Boron has three valence electrons and three half-filled 2p orbitals.
- In order to form three sigma bonds with fluorine atoms, one 2s and two 2p orbitals of boron undergo hybridization to form three equivalent sp2 hybrid orbitals.
- The remaining p orbital of boron is unhybridized and contains a lone pair of electrons.
- Each sp2 hybrid orbital of boron forms a sigma bond with one fluorine atom, and the unhybridized p orbital participates in pi-bonding with the fluorine atoms.

Therefore, the central atom in BF3 adopts sp2 hybridization.
