Given blow are two statements:
Statement I:  Biot-Savart's law gives us the expression for the magnetic field strength of an infinitesimal current element(Idl) of a current carrying conductor only.
Statement II:  Biot-Savart's law is analogous to Coulomb's inverse square law of change q, with the former being related to the field produced by a scalar source, Idl while the latter being produced by a vector source, q.
In light of above statement choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:
  • a)
    Both statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  • b)
    S tatement I is correct and Statement II is incorrect
  • c)
    S tatement I is incorrect and Statement II is correct
  • d)
    Both statement I and Statement II are correct
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?

Statement I: Biot-Savart's law gives us the expression for the magnetic field strength of an infinitesimal current element (Idl) of a current-carrying conductor only.

The Biot-Savart's law states that the magnetic field (dB) produced by an infinitesimal current element (Idl) at a point in space is directly proportional to the current (I), the length of the current element (dl), the sine of the angle between the current element and the line connecting the element to the point in space (θ), and inversely proportional to the square of the distance (r) between the element and the point.

Mathematically, the Biot-Savart's law can be expressed as:

dB = (μ₀/4π) * (Idl × ȓ) / r²

where μ₀ is the permeability of free space, Idl is the infinitesimal current element, ȓ is the vector pointing from the current element to the point in space, and r is the distance between the current element and the point.

Therefore, Statement I is correct.

Statement II: Biot-Savart's law is analogous to Coulomb's inverse square law of charge q, with the former being related to the field produced by a scalar source (Idl) while the latter being produced by a vector source (q).

Coulomb's inverse square law states that the electric field (E) produced by a point charge (q) at a point in space is directly proportional to the charge, and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the charge and the point.

Mathematically, Coulomb's law can be expressed as:

E = (k * q) / r²

where k is the electrostatic constant, q is the charge, and r is the distance between the charge and the point.

The Biot-Savart's law and Coulomb's law have similar mathematical forms, but they apply to different physical phenomena. Biot-Savart's law describes the magnetic field produced by a current-carrying conductor, while Coulomb's law describes the electric field produced by a point charge.

Therefore, Statement II is incorrect.

Conclusion:

Based on the explanations above, the correct answer is option B) Statement I is correct and Statement II is incorrect.
