Most Upvoted Answer
An organic compound with molecular formula C6H6 on treatment with acet...
A: Acylation of C6H6 with Acetyl Chloride and Anhydrous AlCl3
B: Reduction of Compound A with Zn/Hg and con.HCl
C: Oxidation of Compound B with KMnO4/KOH and Acidification
D: Treatment of Compound A with NaOH and I2
E: Formation of Compound E during the treatment of Compound A with NaOH and I2

A: Acylation of C6H6 with Acetyl Chloride and Anhydrous AlCl3:
The reaction between benzene (C6H6) and acetyl chloride (CH3COCl) in the presence of anhydrous aluminum chloride (AlCl3) is known as Friedel-Crafts acylation. This reaction results in the formation of Compound A.

B: Reduction of Compound A with Zn/Hg and con.HCl:
Compound A is a ketone since it was formed through acylation. When Compound A is treated with zinc (Zn), mercury (Hg), and concentrated hydrochloric acid (con.HCl), it undergoes Clemmensen reduction. This reduction reaction converts the ketone group (-C=O) in Compound A into a methyl group (-CH3), resulting in the formation of Compound B.

C: Oxidation of Compound B with KMnO4/KOH and Acidification:
Compound B is a methyl group substituted on a benzene ring. When Compound B is treated with potassium permanganate (KMnO4) in the presence of potassium hydroxide (KOH) and heated, followed by acidification, it undergoes oxidative cleavage. This reaction breaks the benzene ring and converts the methyl group into a carboxylic acid group (-COOH), resulting in the formation of Compound C.

D: Treatment of Compound A with NaOH and I2:
Compound A is treated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and iodine (I2). This reaction is known as the haloform reaction. Compound A is a ketone, and during the haloform reaction, the methyl group adjacent to the carbonyl group (-C=O) is oxidized to a carboxylic acid group (-COOH), resulting in the formation of Compound D.

E: Formation of Compound E during the treatment of Compound A with NaOH and I2:
During the haloform reaction, along with the formation of Compound D, a small amount of Compound E is also formed. Compound E is the trihalomethane (chloroform) that is produced due to the further oxidation of the methyl group in Compound A. Chloroform is formed when all three hydrogen atoms of the methyl group are replaced by chlorine atoms.

Summary:
- Compound A is formed through the acylation of benzene with acetyl chloride and anhydrous aluminum chloride.
- Compound A is then reduced to Compound B through Clemmensen reduction using zinc, mercury, and concentrated hydrochloric acid.
- Compound B is oxidized to Compound C through oxidative cleavage using potassium permanganate, potassium hydroxide, and acidification.
- Compound A is also subjected to the haloform reaction using sodium hydroxide and iodine, resulting in the formation
