An organic compound with molecular formula C6H6 on treatment with acet...
Identification of compounds A, B, C, D, and E:
- Compound A: Organic compound with molecular formula C6H6.
- Compound B: Obtained by treating compound A with Zn/Hg and con.HCl.
- Compound C: Formed by heating compound B with KMnO4/KOH and subsequent acidification.
- Compound D: Obtained by treating compound A with NaOH and I2.
- Compound E: Also obtained by treating compound A with NaOH and I2.

Conversion of compound A to compound B:
The conversion of compound A to compound B involves two steps:
1. Treatment of compound A with acetyl chloride and anhydrous AlCl3.
2. Reaction of compound A with Zn/Hg and con.HCl.

The first step involves the Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction. Acetyl chloride (CH3COCl) acts as an acylating agent, while anhydrous AlCl3 acts as a Lewis acid catalyst. The reaction proceeds as follows:

C6H6 + CH3COCl + AlCl3 → CH3C6H5 + HCl + AlCl3

Here, the acetyl group (CH3CO-) from acetyl chloride gets attached to one of the benzene rings, resulting in the formation of compound A (CH3C6H5).

In the second step, compound A is subjected to the Clemmensen reduction. Zn/Hg and concentrated hydrochloric acid (con.HCl) are used as reagents. The reaction proceeds as follows:

CH3C6H5 + Zn/Hg + con.HCl → CH3C6H5CH3 + H2O

In this step, the acetyl group attached to the benzene ring is reduced to a methyl group, resulting in the formation of compound B (CH3C6H5CH3).

Explanation of the conversion:
- The Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction involves the generation of an acylium ion (CH3CO+) from acetyl chloride in the presence of AlCl3. The acylium ion then attacks the electron-rich benzene ring, leading to the formation of compound A.
- The Clemmensen reduction is a reaction that involves the reduction of a carbonyl group to a hydrocarbon. In this case, the acetyl group in compound A is reduced to a methyl group using Zn/Hg and concentrated hydrochloric acid. The reduction occurs via the formation of a carbocation intermediate, which is then reduced by the Zn/Hg couple.

Overall reaction:
The overall reaction for the conversion of compound A to compound B can be represented as follows:

C6H6 + CH3COCl + AlCl3 → CH3C6H5 + HCl + AlCl3
CH3C6H5 + Zn/Hg + con.HCl → CH3C6H5CH3 + H2O

This conversion allows the introduction of an acetyl group followed by its reduction to a methyl group, resulting in the formation of compound B from compound A.
