Vascular Bundles in Plants

(a) In roots, xylem and phloem in a vascular bundle are arranged in an alternate manner along the different radii.

This statement is correct. In the roots of plants, the vascular bundles consist of xylem and phloem tissues, which are arranged in an alternate manner along different radii. This arrangement is known as radial vascular bundles. The xylem tissue is located towards the center of the vascular bundle, while the phloem tissue is present towards the periphery. This arrangement allows efficient transport of water and nutrients from the roots to the rest of the plant.

(b) Conjoint closed vascular bundles do not possess cambium

This statement is correct. Conjoint closed vascular bundles are found in monocotyledonous plants. These bundles lack cambium, which is a type of meristematic tissue responsible for secondary growth in plants. Without cambium, these vascular bundles cannot undergo secondary growth and do not increase in girth over time.

(c) In open vascular bundles, cambium is present in between xylem and phloem

This statement is incorrect. In open vascular bundles, also known as bicollateral vascular bundles, the cambium is present both between the xylem and phloem (interfascicular cambium) as well as within the xylem and phloem (intrafascicular cambium). This arrangement allows for secondary growth and increases the diameter of the stem.

(d) The vascular bundles of dicotyledonous stem possess endarch protoxylem

This statement is correct. In the vascular bundles of dicotyledonous stems, the protoxylem is located towards the center of the bundle, closer to the pith. This arrangement is known as endarch protoxylem. The metaxylem, which differentiates later, is located towards the periphery of the bundle.

(e) In monocotyledonous root, usually there are more than six xylem bundles present

This statement is incorrect. In monocotyledonous roots, the number of xylem bundles is usually less than six. Monocotyledonous roots typically have a primary xylem and phloem arranged in a ring-like formation. The number of xylem bundles is usually small, ranging from one to a few, and they are scattered throughout the central region of the root.

Therefore, the correct answer is option (a) - (a), (b), and (d) only.
