Location of Parotid Salivary Gland:


  • The parotid salivary gland is the largest of the three pairs of salivary glands present in the human body.

  • It is present in the angle between the two jaws, just below and in front of the ear.



Functions of Parotid Salivary Gland:


  • The parotid salivary gland secretes watery saliva that contains enzymes like salivary amylase, which helps in the digestion of carbohydrates.

  • It also helps in lubricating the food, making it easier to swallow.



Clinical Significance:


  • Inflammation or infection of the parotid gland can lead to a condition known as parotitis, which can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty in opening the mouth.

  • In some cases, the parotid gland may develop tumors, which can be benign or malignant.
