Higly reactove metals, such as sodium and potassium, is obtained in the form of their chlorides (NaCl, KCl). The oxides of this metal can't be converted into pure metals by using carbon as it is done with moderately reactive element. This is because these metals have more affinity towards oxygen then carbon.
Moderately reactive element -
MgO + C ---> Mg + CO
Highly reactive element
Na2O + C ---> No reaction
So, highly reactove element can't be obtained through normal reduction by carbon. To obatain highly reactive elements from their ore we have to do electrolytic reduction of their chlorides.
In this electrolytic reduction, molten metal chlorides (such as NaCl) are taken as electrolyte solution. When electricity is passed, electrons are provided to elements and metal is obtained at cathode (-ve charged electrode) and chlorine is liberated at anode (+ve charged electrode).
Moderately reactive element -
